Winter Wisdom

Updated: Mar 20

Well, we’re in the heart of winter now.  Days are shorter and temps are lower – so low that swimming (my absolute favorite pastime) is not an option.   Although I do enjoy the cold weather, wintertime can really get me down.  Sometimes, I dream of warmer weather when I am able to swim again.

But indulging my wintertime woes is not who I am.  Instead, I try to remain upbeat by staying in tune with the natural rhythms of the season.  I do my best to pay attention to the ordinary – like a few yard birds hunting for food in the snow - and in so doing, I frequently notice the extraordinary – like the beauty of ice crystals forming on a resilient winter berry bush!

I also take note of the natural behaviors of my friends in the wilderness - from my wolfie ancestors in the wild . . . to the Apple Herd of deer in my backyard . . . to the small creatures of the forest.  To them, there’s no such thing as bad weather . . . only bad clothing!

So, what can we learn from them?  During the colder months, bundle up in warm outer wear and go outside for some wintertime fun!  Also, try to make the experience special.  Bring a friend with you - like I do with my younger sister, Juno – and have a blast!

It’s important to remember, however, that winter is a time when trees, plants, and animals naturally slow down.  So, don’t push yourself beyond your seasonal limits!   If you’re tired, do as the bears do and hibernate for a while.  By letting ourselves rest, we’ll have the energy to resurface in the spring!

And once the warmer months finally roll around again, we can get back into the water and swim!  But for now, we need to appreciate the season for what it is - winter!

What do you do to get through the long winter months?  Let me know in the comments below!

Spirit is a perfect name for you. I like thinking about slowing down in the winter. And I like to make soup-it feels like winter fortifying food. xx
