What is Reiki?

The word "Reiki" comes from the Japanese words "rei" (universal) and "ki" (life energy).  This "universal life energy" surrounds all of us and is therefore always accessible to us for healing and rejuvenation.  To maintain a positive physical and emotional balance, our energy should be strong and free-flowing. But oftentimes, this is not the case, and our energy becomes weak or blocked, resulting in a state of emotional or physical imbalance.

Although spiritual in nature, Reiki is not connected to any particular religion.  Also, Reiki is not the same as massage therapy, since the Reiki practitioner does not manipulate muscle or tissue.

At Golden Karma Reiki, John Skiendziel, Reiki Master Teacher, channels this universal life energy through a patient's body in a subtle manner, focusing on the seven chakras: crown, third eye, throat, heart, solar plexus, sacral, and root.  His goal is to decrease tension and stress, restore energy balance, and facilitate physical and emotional healing.

What are the origins of Reiki?

Mikao Usui from Japan is credited with rediscovering the Reiki root system in 1922.  After passing his methods down through several Reiki grandmasters in the East, Reiki eventually made its way to the Western cultures.  Today, Reiki takes many forms, but the Usui System of Natural Healing is still the form most widely practiced. Current practitioners and Master Teachers are trained through Usui. Prior to establishing Golden Karma Reiki, John Skiendziel received his Reiki Master Teacher certification from instructors trained through this Usui lineage.

Who can benefit from Reiki?

Reiki is practiced in many hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, animal sanctuaries/shelters, and hospice settings to reduce stress, promote relaxation, and improve emotional or physical energy imbalances.  People, companion animals (dogs, cats, horses, birds, reptiles, rodents, and other domestic animals), wildlife, and other animals can benefit from Reiki. Reiki is not a cure for illness or disease, however, and is meant to be used as a tool to complement traditional medicine.
